I am originally from Fort-de-France; Martinique “Péyi”. I started at La Mauny in 1994 as Head of the Quality Department.
My job as Cellar Master is to lead and organize the ageing of our rums to make the best possible blends that will enhance the aromas of each of our batches; I create blends that perfectly express the Maison La Mauny signature: generous Agricole rums with a great aromatic array and remarkable fullness.

Robert supervises the management and upkeep of the barrels in our cellars where the Agricole rums age; he supervises the barreling and the racking of our rums after they have aged and are ready to be bottled.

However, there are acts I do every day during the production campaign: I carefully observe the fermentation process and taste the rums when they come out of the distillation column; I talk with the teams at the distillery; I follow the work with the cellars’ team and work on the creation and development of new references.
What are the main qualities of a Quality and Development Manager?
The job is complex and varied. In my opinion you need a strong personality, great personal implication, rigor and a perfect organization. You have to be able to work on the field and make decisions as well, two aspects of the job I really enjoy.

The portrait of the Creole woman, our emblem, of course! Hardworking and reserved, but when she lets her hair down… no one is sweeter, prettier and more sensuous! You just need to give her time for her to slowly reveal her charm and her intelligence.

As Director of Agriculture I manage Maison La Mauny’s lands, the production of sugarcane as well as all the activities of the BBS Group, who owns Maison La Mauny. My job consists in planning the activities and managing the agricultural activity, managing and organizing the planting of the sugarcanes, their upkeep and their harvest.
What are the essential qualities of a Director of Agriculture?
Besides liking the work and the culture of sugarcane of course, you need to be a field worker with a good sense of observation and attentive listening; you need management and operational skills and good communication, a mind open to changes and technical progress.

A typical Agricole rum distillery of Southern Martinique and actually the last one that exists, due to its particular terroir and location. It is in the heart of a southern valley that enjoys a micro-climate that is unique on the island because of the sunny weather and high humidity due to the rich, acid clay soil with high potassium that gives the sugarcanes exceptional sugar content.
